To paraphrase Island City Stage, the blistering, dark comedy, The First Step — Diary of a Sex Addict graphically depicts the story of Joe, a gay sex addict, whose turbulent journey leads toward recovery. Written and directed by Tony-nominated Michael Leeds, The First Step is funny, poignant, and full of flights of fantasy, revealing a life rarely seen on the stage. The play contains male and female nudity, strong language, and sexual situations. (For info about the play and the theater, see Island City Stage.) inspired… A wry tale of sexual obsession with inventive stellar moments.
— The New York Times

Who’s ready for some comedy mixed with a little bit of sex? … The First Step — Diary of a Sex Addict … will leave your heart beating fast. … This show is funny, steamy, and full of temptations that will have your fantasies going through the roof. Maybe your body as well. — Florida Agenda

Not only is it [a] powerful play, it is stageworthy. [The First Step] switches locales at the drop of a hat from club to bathroom to street. I love challenges like those that require creative use of lights and props. There are also plenty of demands on the actors who must visibly switch roles at the blink of an eye. For me, this is the fun. — Michael Leeds, quoted in South Florida Gay News (SFGN)

Joe's story [is told] with uproarious humor, disturbing psychodrama, and a freewheeling unpredictability — a nonlinear approach that befits the play's origins in the fringe festival circuit... The narrative jumps from flashbacks to Joe's present-day self-destruction (he has contracted HIV in the process) to a number of creative sketches. … The differences between gays and straights and between gay and straight sex addicts are revealed in an amusing, faux-Dating Game arrangement… [S]keptics of sex addiction's legitimacy [as a disease] will walk away with an understanding of just how debilitating [it] is. — New Times Broward / Palm Beach
