About Jerker: Its full, original title is Jerker, or The Helping Hand: A Pornographic Elegy with Redeeming Social Value and a Hymn to the Queer Men of San Francisco in Twenty Telephone Calls, Many of Them Dirty. It was written by the late Robert Chesley, who was theatre critic for The Bay Area Guardian.

Jerker is Chesley’s most performed play. It became notorious after a radio broadcast of excerpts on the Los Angeles public radio station caused the Federal Communications Commission to attempt censorship. The play is set in 1980s San Francisco, when gay sex was both uninhibited and frightening because of the unfolding AIDS epidemic. Two men, J.R. and Bert, engage in frank and raw phone sex that excites them, while building a strong, unseen bond between them. Jerker is unflinching in its language and sensuality, yet compelling in depicting the search for love.

The play contains male nudity, strong language, and sexual content. For additional insights, see a review from the 20th anniversary revival in 2006.

I've never seen a play that went from the near-pornographic to the tragic, but ‘Jerker’ achieves it. — The New York Times

It is in-your-face and raunchy, and of course we get titillated by that. But then it turns around and punches you in the stomach with its depth and sensitivity and the love between the two characters. — Dean Howell, who played the role of Bert in the 2006 production

Here are a couple of brief, promotional videos. Dates of the extended production are Saturdays in March 2021.

Admission is by advance ticket purchase; $20 per person (plus $2.29 processing fee). Maximum capacity is 25 (due to social distancing). This performance sold out, but keep checking under "Buy Ticket(s)" in case anyone cancels. No refunds past March 12, 2021.
